Life is about to get a lot less happy
AN EMBUGGERANCE
Folks,
I would have liked to keep this one quiet for a little while, but because of upcoming conventions and of course the need to keep my publishers informed, it seems to me unfair to withhold the news. I have been diagnosed with a very rare form of early
onset Alzheimer's, which lay behind this year's phantom "stroke".
We are taking it fairly philosophically down here and possibly with a mild optimism. For now work is continuing on the completion of Nation and the basic notes are already being laid down for Unseen Academicals. All other things being equal, I
expect to meet most current and, as far as possible, future commitments but will discuss things with the various organisers. Frankly, I would prefer it if people kept things cheerful, because I think there's time for at least a few more books yet :o)

PS I would just like to draw attention to everyone reading the above that this should be interpreted as 'I am not dead'. I will, of course, be dead at some future point, as will everybody else. For me, this maybe further off than you think - it's too soon to tell.
I know it's a very human thing to say "Is there anything I can do", but in this case I would only entertain offers from very high-end experts in brain chemistry.

I'm hogging Gobula's comments
How goes the gameplay, people? Gobula's playing this, and Tiger and I are at different stages of this (just about the first ten minutes is the introduction, the next seven is early gameplay and exposition). Anybody else in the middle of something?

Aw, I was hoping for the Badger Song
Your Score: All Your Base
You scored 59 Awesomeness and 62 Style!

You are the mothership of all memes. You have all the advantages of a really great meme, you have a catchy song, and you appeal to a large number of people who can distribute you easily. Unfortunately, however, you tend to be the mainstay of people who aren't funny trying to be funny, and as many times as you've been played, you should probably be taken out into a lonely field, and shot. Repeatedly. By nukes.
Not surprisingly, you can be found at: http://www.allyourbasearebelongtous.com/

Joining the crowd. . .
Your Score: Progressive
You scored 78 Equality, 78 Liberty, and 28 Stability!
Your commitment to both liberty and equality makes you a blend of the Liberal and the Socialist. For you liberty and equality are two parts of the same condition. Everyone has to be free to pursue their own way-of-life but in order for that to happen everyone must start with a similar basic standard of living.
You value liberty particularly in cultural and personal life. You also value government intervention to promote equity in economic life while still supporting private enterprise. If this is too bland for you then try the Radical on for size.

I'm pissed off, is what I am!
I can't really go into the details of what all makes me frothingly furious about this without violating the laws against (help me out Hadrian, is it libel or slander?)ing my workplace in a public, online forum. Don't get me started on that, either.
Well, Friday I'll be lunching with a new employee of a different system. . . perhaps she'll know of an opening.

How low can you go?
My favorite bit:
In writings before his election as Pope in 2005, the then Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger made it clear he believed the concept of limbo should be abandoned because it was "only a theological hypothesis" and "never a defined truth of faith."

Underneath it all, you fear your world falling apart. You'll put up with a situation that you don't like in fear of changing it. I mostly managed to read new titles, except for the Pratchett that I reread to catch myself back up for the new one, and the LeGuin that I read again because I was home sick without any new books. It was either that, The Dark is Rising, or Narnia. I felt more like Earthsea.
That and it was unpacked. ;)
Thanks to all those who suggested titles, primarily Degolar. It was a fairly lackluster year for me, but I enjoyed what I read a lot more than I had in the last couple of years.

Brain fries
Second, I almost had my brain implode today when I saw a Prius with a W bumper sticker. It wasn't until I managed to get really close to it that I could tell it actually read "Worst ever" and my sanity was salvaged. Still, I dig on stealth bumper stickers.

Now taking book suggestions
Currently I have a passel of Scott Westerfield lined up, and I think I'm still on the list for the last Artemis Fowl. The last four years that I've been participating I've ended up reading most of the common titles and more than a few obscure ones. Therefore, I'm opening the floor to suggestions.
Hit me with some good titles. I tend to prefer high-level J or YA, but anything well written will do. I'm not exceptionally picky about subject matter, either. Some of my favorites from past years have been Kira Kira, The Changeling Sea, A Step from Heaven, The Gospel According to Larry, What Happened to Lani Garver?, and The Eyes of the Amaryllis. Those range from high fantasy to teenage angst with everything in between. If I haven't read it already, I'll give it a shot.
Let the suggestionfest begin!
