Wow. They aren't kidding about the blood, are they? A horrifically violent beginning to what I'm told is a horrifically violent series. A friend recommended this to me, at greath length, going to the extent of sending me his copy of the first volume to get me started on it, and all I can say is I wish I hadn't read it while I was eating.

The protagonist, Guts, looks like semi-standard manga fare. Musclebound with a lot of decorative scarring, left arm made of metal, and a sword that looks like it used to belong to a spiky-haired, blond amnesiac. The first page is a quasi-graphic shot of Guts having sex with a woman...who turns into a monster and tries to eat him, only to have her head blown apart by the shotgun/arm shoved in its mouth.

Perfect for lovers of extreme gore, I can see the barest glimmer of a decent plot hiding under the layers of blood and viscera, so odds are I'll read more of the series in order to uncover it. The bonus here is that the art is B&W, so the graphic dismemberment, etc., is marginally toned down.
